Historical Background of Ikang Paus by Josephine Paus Basil
I am the daughter of Ikang Paus, the second child of his second wife Nellie Alilis. As an 84 years old, I'm taking this opportunity to be heard by the Paus Clan, in relation to his claim as an indigenous people of Tuba Benguet
The NCIP of Baguio must consider my father's family towards an ancestral claimant of an American Title 13 land at the city Dairy Farm who all have the rights of ownership as heirs.
Ikang Paus was an Ibaloi native of Baguio City. His parents resided during his childhood days, right on the spot where the City Hall of Baguio is presently located. It was here where he was born at that time in the 1890's. Badday, (his father) with his family moved later to Bekakeng, Baguio.
Ikang Paus belongs to a big family of seven: Kimbatoy, Paus, Piso, Pipina, Magon, Katuging, and James Badday.
Having no inheritance from his father Badday, he moved out from the city and headed to the south Tuba Central where he got married and settled there for the rest of his life. He first married Saguinay related to Yaris the earliest settler of Tuba Central, then married Nellie Alilis from Taloy Sur, Tuba,Benguet.
Paus declared several lands for his livestocks one of it was Titled in 1917, surveyed by the American surveyor in 1914 an area of 101.81 in total of 3 lots.
He donated the cemetery in Bomasgao, Tuba Central for the Ibaloi community where his family from both wives, inherited Bomasgao adjacent to Sta. Lucia Baguio.
He also bought his brother's land in Matjeo and Bekkes. Then later I bought it from him and had it surveyed with a Title land of 32 hectares now owned by the Basil family located below Marcos Highway, Tuba Central.
My father was not educated but was able to have a position in the government as Councilor who settles family issue in parental marriages and entertains visitors from low lands before the Japanese War.
As the oldest girl in the family I saw how my father managed the Ibaloi community. He rather give the best "a-a-fag" and left for his family the scratch when distributing meat during canao as their culture.
He suffered humiliation, jealousy and rejection and known as poor guy. Paus name was not popular in the Ibaloi community for some reason.
